Bury St Edmunds Abbey Archives

This database is the result of a study of the books and documents from the abbey of Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk County performed by Rodney Thomson for graduate and doctoral work. The project was initially a bibliographical essay and catalogue of the holdings of the library and archive of Bury St Edmunds Abbey, which then evolved into a more in-depth thesis, and finally into the work presented here. Through his study, Thomson determined that while the documents of the archive and the library could be studied together, there exists a separation among their histories, as the two entities were not exactly dependent upon each other. Therefore, this work only examines the collection held at the archive of Bury. Some of the records examined here include charters, court and account rolls, cartularies and registers, and records of dependencies of the abbey.
