 Sibton Abbey Cartularies and Charters

Built in 1150, Sibton Abbey was the only Cistercian abbey in Suffolk County. Though the larger and more ancient abbey of Bury St Edmunds often overshadowed the smaller monastic houses of Suffolk, the smaller houses still played an important role in the agrarian economy of the county. The first volume is an introduction to the Sibton Abbey cartularies and charters. The text of the cartularies and charters themselves are published throughout three additional volumes, all of which are included in this database. Topics found within this database include information about the abbey, a list of all known abbots, the founder of Sibton (William de Chesney), his family and the Foundation, benefactors of the abbey, and the abbey's possessions, documents, and manuscripts, as well as an explanation about the editorial method used to prepare these records for publication.
